Admin Assistant/Translation



JOB SUMMARY:
The purpose of the Translation Assistant position is to provide high quality translated materials from English to Arabic and Vice Versa. S/he is responsible for the translation, editing and proofreading of programs and/or support department and/or any other documents.  S/he will also provide simultaneous and consecutive translation during meetings and workshops. 
This post works across all the programs of the Southern Syria Unit, and WoS when needed, in accordance with agreed standards and program principles. It provides high quality translated materials, reviews translated materials on a regular basis, and develops glossaries and terminology databases for key technical terms specific to the humanitarian sector.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

Job Responsibility #1: Translation of materials from English to Arabic and Vice Versa  

  • Reading through original material and rewriting it in the target language, ensuring that the meaning of the source text is retained including official external communications, reports and internal policy documents.
  • Using specialist dictionaries, thesauruses and reference books to find the closest equivalents for terminology and words used;
  • Ensure that Arabic translations of English documents are factually and grammatically correct.
  • Under the supervision of the Admin Coordinator support with admin tasks and similar as per need.

Job Responsibility #2: Editing and proofreading of already translated documents
10% of Time
 Job Responsibility #3: Providing simultaneous and consecutive translation during meetings and workshops when needed  
15%
Job Responsibility #4: Compile information, such as technical terms, into glossaries and terminology databases to be used in future translation work

  • Develop glossaries and terminology databases for each sector and regularly update these glossaries and terminology databases

  • Supervise a translation volunteer when needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Education and training
Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in English literature or Translation
         Desired:
  • Advanced courses in simultaneous and consecutive translation
  1. Managerial Know How 
Involves integrating and harmonizing requirements of diverse functions in operating, support, and administrative situations. It may be exercised through consultation as well as direct action; Management requires a combination of planning, organizing, controlling, and reviewing along with direct and indirect execution. Choose one of the following: Task; Minimal; Related; Diverse; Broad.

  • This position requires (Minimal) managerial know-how. 
Required:
  • Previous successful experience in translation
Desired:
  • At least one year of experience in similar position.
  • Experience in development and/or humanitarian organizations.

Required:
  • Proven skills in transalation
  • Advanced skills in written communication
  • Proven ability in managing work schedules to meet deadlines
  • Strong skills in inter-personal communications, able to work effectively with multiple stakeholders in a complex, multi-actor environment.
  • Sensitivity to cultural differences and the ability to work effectively across a wide variety of cultural contexts.
  • Strong team player, able to develop and maintain effective working relationships within a distributed and dynamic team.
  • Flexible, creative and solution-oriented approach in an innovative environment
  • Highly skilled with MS Office applications, including Word, Excel and Outlook and data management platforms.
